Panus roseus (Karun., K.D. Hyde & Zhu L. Yang) N. Vinjusha & T.K.A. Kumar comb. nov.
Basionym:— Lentinus roseus Karunarathna, K.D. Hyde & Zhu L. Yang View in CoL , in Karunarathna, Yang, Zhao, Vellinga, Bahkali, Chukeatirote & Hyde, Mycol. Progr. 10 (4): 392 (2011)). MycoBank: 518240, from Thailand.
According to Karunarathna et al. (2011), Panus roseus is characterized by a relatively small basidiome, with coriaceous, deeply cyathiform, pink-coloured pileus, dimitic hyphal system, with thick-walled unbranched skeletal hyphae, presence of clavate, cheilocystidia and metuloids, and ellipsoid to elongate basidiospores.
For full taxonomic description and comparison with related species, see Karunarathna et al. (2011).
Remarks:— Type material of Panus roseus was not examined in this study. The new combination is based on morphological characters from the original description of P. roseus (as “ L. roseus ”, Karunarathna et al. 2011 ), and based on molecular phylogenetic analysis with the available GenBank sequence of the species from China.
Molecular characterization
A BLAST search, using the ITS sequence of the specimen AK61b (described as Lentinus bambusinus by Kumar & Manimohan 2005), resulted in 93%and 94.5% identity with two undescribed Panus species from India (GenBank numbers-KP686453, MG279699 View Materials respectively). BLAST result also showed 94% similarity with an accession of Neolentinus kauffmanii (A.H. Sm.) Redhead & Ginns (1985: 357) (earlier treated in Panus , as P. kauffmanii (A.H. Sm.) Corner (1981: 64) (GenBank number-JQ428821), 91% similarity with accessions of Panus strigellus (GenBank numbers-MW407012, JQ955724 View Materials , JQ955727 View Materials ) and 90% identity with accessions of Panus conchatus (GenBank numbers-MK192053, MH857778 View Materials , MG231758 View Materials ).
The phylogenetic tree ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ) shows the placement of “ Lentinus bambusinus ” with related taxa in the order Polyporales Gäum. In the tree, “ Lentinus bambusinus ” resolved as a distinct taxon along with two undescribed species of Panus , with 96% bootstrap support. In the analysis, the species “ Panus roseus ” formed a sister clade with Panus conchatus , with 93% bootstrap support. Both the species, L. bambusinus and L. roseus showed no phylogenetic affinities with the members of the genus Lentinus .
