Type Locality: None given, probably South Africa.

Vernacular Names: Strap-toothed Whale.

Synonyms: Mesoplodon floweri Haast 1876 ; Mesoplodon guntheri Krefft 1871 ; Mesoplodon longirostris Gray 1873 ; Mesoplodon thomsoni Ogilby 1896 .

Distribution: Southern hemisphere: temperate waters.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Data Deficient.

Discussion: Reviewed by J. G. Mead (1989 c). Mesoplodon traversii , a former synonym of M. layardii , was recently recognized as a valid species ( Helden et al., 2002).
