Range:— Lowlands of the Amazonian forests in French Guiana, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, northern Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia (CO); also reported from Panama and Costa Rica ( Moran 1995), and likely to be found in Suriname.

Ecology:— Common; erect terrestrial, in humid forests, especially in disturbed areas, along edges, and in secondary forests; 200–500 m, 0–700 m elsewhere.

Notes:— Hypolepis hostilis is characterized by spinulose petioles and rachises, petioles black at bases (stramineous distally), costules and veins with glandular hairs, and glabrous laminar tissue between the veins.
