Type Locality: "Africa", type locality is in error, fixed by Cabrera (1957) as "arrabales de Belem, la antigua Pará." [ Brazil] .

Vernacular Names: Amazon Weasel.

Distribution: Amazon Basin in Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru.

Conservation: IUCN – Data Deficient.

Discussion: Youngman (1982) and Abramov (1999) placed africana in subgenus Grammogale . Izor and de la Torre (1978) suggested that africana and felipei form a monophyletic group. Cabrera (1957) considered Grammogale a valid genus.
