Ctenipocoris oscari Herrera, NEW SPECIES View in CoL

Detailed measurements of the specimens are given in Table 1.

Description of female holotype ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 & 2 View FIGURE 2 ): Oval, rather elongated; compressed dorsoventrally. Widest in posterior half. Dorsal coloration black; head, pronotum, embolium, legs, some spots on scutellum, and connexiva yellowish brown. Ventrally covered mostly with short setae; anterior half of the body lighter than posterior half, abdomen black.

Head: Ventrally depressed as in all the species of the genus. Yellowish brown, with two parallel rows of scattered spots on midline, becoming darker anteriorly. Three black spots along inner margin of eyes. Surface not smooth but slightly shagreened and finely punctate. Golden setae along inner margin of eyes without regular pattern and along anterior edge near labrum. Eyes black, inner margins strongly convergent in anterior quarter and almost straight in posterior three-quarters. Labrum dark yellowish brown, anterior edge rounded and covered with numerous golden setae.

Anterior, posterior, and lateral margins almost straight. Yellowish brown with darker brown stripe or band on posterior margin and on anterior margin next to head; with dispersed black spots laterally and two elongated and curved black markings, each aligned with inner margin of eye. Finely perforated with transverse wrinkles on anterior margin. Golden setae scattered on surface, especially along lateral margins, emerging from small black spots. Anterolateral and posterolateral corners rounded, latter not exceeding posterior margin.

Sternum: With small keel along midline of prosternum; anterior part of mesosternum with small rounded tubercle on midline; metasternum with long, rigid spine directed posteriorly.

Scutellum: Slightly depressed on midline, this depression becoming more evident posteriorly; markedly punctate. Black with yellowish brown, slightly elevated, rounded marking at center of lateral margins; markings almost reaching acute apex of scutellum. Anterior margin, faintly convex; with two yellowish brown spots on each side of midline. Lateral margins with anterior half convex and posterior half sinuate.

Hemelytra: Not reaching tip of abdomen, showing clearly connexiva. Clavus black, elevated, punctate. Claval suture well defined. Base and anterior third with dark yellowish brown coloration, with some isolated setae near base. Hemelytral commissure dark brown, slightly elevated, with yellowish brown lateral margins. Embolium perforated, yellowish brown on anterior two-thirds, posterior third dark; external margin with row of thin setae; rounded, arched, following contour of hemelytra and membrane. Corium black, punctate, with long, scattered setae; junction with membrane irregular. Membrane black, elongated, punctate irregularly with small black spots; posterior part relatively narrow.

Abdomen: Dorsally black, pilose, with short setae, these being much longer along lateral margins and posterolateral corners of connexiva. Ventrally, covered with very short setae except on midline where abdomen widens. Segments finely punctate with very thin setae covering the abdomen. Posterior margin of segments V – VI with horizontal row of flattened setae. Posterolateral corners of connexiva blunt and rounded, not acute or sharply produced, in ventral view. Connexiva yellowish brown with setae along lateral margin, becoming longer on posterolateral corner. Posterolateral corner exceeding posterior margin of sternites IV – V, but rounded. Subgenital plate of female with small apical notch ( Fig. 3) and covered with flattened setae.

Legs: Femur I elongated, light yellowish brown; with row of short, thick setae anterior margin; posterior margin with some short, thick spines and long setae arranged in rows. Tibia I with two rows of short setae on sides of inner margin; each of these rows composed medially of two rows of short spines. Anterodorsal margin of tibia with line of setal tufts. Tarsus I with setae arranged similarly to tibia I; with two claws of similar size. Femur II light yellowish brown, with anterior margin covered with long, soft setae; anteroventral margin with row of longer, thicker setae; posterior margin with longitudinal row of thick, stiff, short, and long setae; posterior margin with short and long setae. Tibia II with short, stout, black setae along anterior and posterior margins; with fine, long setae on anterior margin. Tarsus II bisegmented, with setae arranged similarly to tibia II, with two claws similar in size. Femur III with row of short, similar-sized spines on posterior margin, the rest similar to femur II. Tibia III similar to tibia II, but with thin row of long swimming hairs along posterior margin and thick row on anterior margin. Tarsus III bisegmented, with setae arranged similarly to tibia III, with small spines on leading margin. Two claws similar in size.

Description of the male allotype. Only the traits that differ from the holotype are herein described. Body smaller in size and narrower; more dorsoventrally compressed. Embolium and hemelytra lighter in color with dark reddish brown tinge. Connexiva light brownish yellow. Coxae, meso- and metanotum with lighter coloration. Sternites VI – VIII covered with flattened long setae, more glabrous on their midline. Posterolateral corner of abdominal segment IV slightly exceeding posterior margin of sternite. Sternite V with notch on midline of posterior margin, this sternite longitudinally divided into two along midline. Male genitalia were not extracted in here, because since the author agrees with the opinion of López-Ruf (2004) in her redescription of C. schadei, which states that these characters are not of great value to differentiate species.

Etymology. It is a great pleasure for me to dedicate this new species to my father Óscar Enrique Herrera Varela, for his unconditional support through the years.

Distribution. Known only from the type material.

Type locality data. COSTA RICA. Holotype collected in Heredia Province; Sarapiquí, La Selva Biological Station, La Flamínea Swamp, [10°25'30.45"N; 84°0'48.30"O, 60 m. a.s.l.] Collected by A. Schlagbauer, IV 1992. Allotype collected in Limón Province; Guápiles, EARTH University, La Lechería Wetland Lagoon, [10°13'5.54"N; 83°35'52.77"O, 36 m. a.s.l.] Collected by L. Luna, IV 1999.

Locality of type material. Deposited in the Aquatic Entomology Collection at the MZUCR, San José, Costa Rica. Both specimens are preserved in 70% ethanol.

Comparative notes. C. oscari differs from C. brasiliensis in having a rigid metasternal spine; from C. schadei by having a small tubercle on the anterior part of the mesosternum; and from C. spinipes by size and by having the pronotum, scutellum, and hemelytra punctuate. In addition, C. peruvianus differs from C. oscari in having the pronotum and hemelytra brownish and a rounded female subgenital plate (the female specimen has not been described yet, but the California Academy of Sciences (CAS), San Francisco, CA possess a female specimen from Santa Teresa, Dept. Huanuco, Peru, that was revised by the author). Finally, C. plaumanni is smaller in size and has small rounded scales on its membrane.
