Benstonea odoardoi is a synonym of the large tree B. lauterbachii
Benstonea lauterbachii View in CoL (Schumann & Warburg in Warburg 1900: 81) Callmander & Buerki in Callmander et al. (2012: 335) View Cited Treatment .
Basionym: Pandanus lauterbachii Schumann & Warburg View in CoL in Warburg (1900: 81). Type:— PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Madang Prov.: Gogol, 28.X.1890, Lauterbach 863 (holo-: B [B 10 0216880]!).
Syn.: Pandanus odoardoi Martelli (1904: 304) . Benstonea odoardoi (Martelli) Callmander & Buerki in Callmander et al. (2012: 336) [as “odoardii” correctable under ICN Art. 60.12 and Rec. 60C.1(a)]. Type:— PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Western Prov.: Fly river, 1877, d’Albertis s.n. (holotype, FI-B [FI003939, 3 sheets: Erbario Beccari 1526, 1526A, 1526B]!; isotype, FI [FI003940]!), syn. nov.
Notes:— Benstonea odoardoi was accepted by Callmander et al. (2012) following current taxonomic species circumscription ( Stone 1978; Jebb 1992). New investigations of the type specimen (d’Albertis s.n.) deposited at FI showed a spicate infrutescence bearing massive oblong syncarps on a strong peduncle ( Fig. 1A–B View FIGURE 1 ). It is considered here as a synonym of the earliest published B. lauterbachii , a well-known and widespread large tree species growing on wet soils in swampy lowland evergreen tropical forest often along river banks in New Guinea ( Fig. 2B–C View FIGURE 2 ) and northern Australia ( Jebb 1992; Wilson 2011).
