Hyposoter vividus ( Holmgren, 1860) View in CoL View at ENA

Limneria vivida Holmgren, 1860 : lectotype ♀ NHRS designated by Hinz (1964), examined by Horstmann.

syn. Anilasta albicrus Thomson, 1887 ( Aubert 1972) .

Can easily be confused with Hyposoter virginalis or H. longulus : the former is very similar in general coloration, with the hind tibia coloration almost identical, but the area superomedia is short and broad and the seventh tergite strongly incised at apex in a V-shape; H. longulus usually has the median area of the hind tibia with an orange tinge, but it may be very pale in some specimens and these are best distinguished by the absence of clearly visible punctation on the lower mesopleuron. Specimens with extensive yellow on the fore and mid coxae might be confused with H. rivulator sp. nov., but can be distinguished by the rugose area petiolaris, which is finely granulate in rivulator .

3 specimens in the NHMUK collection were reared in the UK from Thecla betulae (Linnaeus) ( Lepidoptera , Lycaenidae ). Two more from Poland were reared from ‘ Depressaria’ ( Lepidoptera , Depressariidae ). Horstmann’s collection includes specimens reared in Germany from Lycophotia porphyrea , ([Denis & Schiffermuller]), Anarta myrtilli (Linnaeus) ( Lepidoptera , Noctuidae ), and Thecla sp. A specimen in NMS was reared from an indeterminate green noctuid on Myrica sp. collected in Poland. Koponen et al. (2003) recorded specimens reared from Alucita hexadactyla Linnaeus ( Lepidoptera , Alucitidae ) and Yponomeuta evonymella (Linnaeus) ( Lepidoptera , Yponomeutidae ): the former particularly seems an unlikely host on size alone, and identification problems may well be involved.

We have seen specimens from the UK, Sweden, Germany and Poland. There are widespread older records in the literature from most parts of Europe, including the Mediterranean. The handful of phenological records available are from May, July and August.

Six specimens from the third author’s collection were barcoded (BOLD Sample IDs CollHH1217, 3497, 3498. 3499. 3500, and 3501).
