The holotype of I. pensus View in CoL is fully clothed while the holotype of I. tricostatus View in CoL is severely abraded. The other character that Broun uses to distinguish I. tricostatus View in CoL is the more developed rostral carinae, which is a variable character in many species of Chalepistes View in CoL .
