The A. blanchardi species-group is comprised of nine species, including A. pavoniestes . This species is characterized by a mucro which is 0.3X as long as the metabasitarsomere, variegated vestiture on dorsal surfaces, and male genitalia having a rounded ventral valve and usually many spines in the internal sac. Acanthoscelides blanchardi Johnson , Acanthoscelides fryxelli Johnson , Acanthoscelides orlandi Johnson , and A. pavoniestes have host plants exclusively in the family Malvaceae View in CoL ; Acanthoscelides hibiscicola Johnson has been collected from the legume Senna skinneri (Benth.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby View in CoL as a marginal host, however, its main hosts are in Malvaceae View in CoL . For the remaining bruchids in the species-group ( Acanthoscelides santander Johnson , Acanthoscelides vexatus (Sharp) , and A. wicki ), the host plants are unknown.

Host Plant. Pavonia candida ( Johnson 1983) .

Distribution. This species is a Mexican endemic and has been collected only in the states of Michoacán and Nayarit.
