The A. blanchardi   species-group is comprised of nine species, including A. pavoniestes   . This species is characterized by a mucro which is 0.3X as long as the metabasitarsomere, variegated vestiture on dorsal surfaces, and male genitalia having a rounded ventral valve and usually many spines in the internal sac. Acanthoscelides blanchardi Johnson   , Acanthoscelides fryxelli Johnson   , Acanthoscelides orlandi Johnson   , and A. pavoniestes   have host plants exclusively in the family Malvaceae   ; Acanthoscelides hibiscicola Johnson   has been collected from the legume Senna skinneri (Benth.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby   as a marginal host, however, its main hosts are in Malvaceae   . For the remaining bruchids in the species-group ( Acanthoscelides santander Johnson   , Acanthoscelides vexatus (Sharp)   , and A. wicki   ), the host plants are unknown.

Host Plant. Pavonia candida ( Johnson 1983)   .

Distribution. This species is a Mexican endemic and has been collected only in the states of Michoacán and Nayarit.
