LITERATURE. — Green & Sayer (1979); Holyoak & Seddon (1989); Thonnérieux et al. (1989); Dowsett (1993); Balanca & de Visscher (1997); Weesie & Belemsobgo (1997); Mauvais (1998); Borrow & Demey (2001, 2014); Portier (2002c); Thiollay (2006a, b); Balanca et al. (2007); Sinclair & Ryan (2010); Pavia et al. (2012); Dowsett et al. (2013).

FIELD DATA. — eBird; GBIF; WABD; XC.

STATUS. — Two subspecies are present: M. m. migrans (Boddaert, 1873), Palaearctic migrant and M. m. parasitus (Daudin, 1800) Resident; Breeding.

REMARK. — According to Borrow & Demey (2014) in Burkina Faso the species is present with both the Resident; Breeding M. m. parasitus and the Palaearctic migrant M. m. migrans. The presence of the former is indicated by Thonnerieux et al. (1989), Weesie & Belemsobgo (1997), Pavia et al. (2012), while the latter is reported in Weesie & Belesobgo (1997), Pavia et al. (2012). All the other references refer to the species as a whole. M. m. parasitus is sometimes treated as subspecies of a separate species as M. aegyptius parasitus (del Hoyo & Collar 2014).
