Distribution. From North Carolina to Texas, Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Surinam, and Brazil (from Pará to Rio Grande do Sul) ( Melo 2003).

Ecological notes. Freshwater species. In turbid, generally slow waters, with abundant marginal vegetation, and muddy substratum. Sometimes found in brackish waters ( Melo 2003).
