Distribution. Western Atlantic – east coast of the United States, Antilles, and Brazil (from Maranhão to São Paulo) ( Melo 1996). Central Atlantic – Ascension Island ( Manning & Chace 1990).

Ecological notes. Under rocks, on rock and coral reefs. Shallow waters to 25 m ( Melo 1996).

Previous records in Bahia. Smith (1869), Moreira (1901), Rathbun (1930), Joly et al. (1969), Gomes Corrêa (1972), Barreto et al. (1993).

Remarks. The type locality of P. h a r t t i i is Abrolhos, Bahia ( Smith 1869).
