Type and type locality. The lectotype is held at Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, Netherlands ( RMNH 30) designated by Bruce (1987a) with the type locality from Djakarta, Indonesia ( Bleeker 1857).

Remarks. Anilocra leptosoma can be identified by the antennula article 3 being only moderately produced, pleonite 1 short, posterolateral corners of pleonites 4 and 5 not produced, flat and markedly ovate pleotelson with a distinct apex (occasionally forming a caudomediallobe), rounded uropods, pereopod 1 with moderate nodules, and pereopods 2–4 with prominent anterior nodule and 2 posterior nodules.

This species is most similar to Anilocra caudata Bovallius, 1887 and Anilocra monoma Bowman & Tareen, 1983 . There are several differences between A. leptosoma and the Bovallius (1887) subspecies is here given specific rank. The differences are in A. caudata : pleonite 1 posterolateral margins not produced (produced in A. leptosoma ); pleotelson lateral margins straight, weakly upturned (convex and flat); pleotelson posterior margins abruptly angled to caudomedial point (converging smoothly to point). Anilocra monoma has the pereopod nodules very weakly developed and a pleotelson the same as that of A. leptosome .

Anilocra alloceraea Koelbel, 1879 had long been considered a synonym of A. leptosoma . Later, Bruce (1987a) stated that the comparison of Indonesian material to Koelbel’s figure readily identified the species, and it can be distinguished from A. leptosoma by the far narrower body, far more strongly produced antennula article 3, more strongly developed nodules on the dactyls of pereopods 1–4, pleonite 1 being much longer, and pleotelson lateral margins strongly turned up with the posterior margin bisinuate.

Distribution. From Indonesia ( Bleeker 1857), Philippines ( Schiöedte & Meinert 1881) and Eastern Australia from Townsville to Brisbane ( Bruce 1987a). Recently Aneesh et al. (2017b) reported from Arabian Sea, Malabar Coast of India.

Hosts. Known only from family Clupeidae : Nematalosa come (Richardson, 1846) , and Nematolosa erebi (Günther, 1868) are the only identified hosts for A. leptosoma ( Schiöedte & Meinert 1881; Bruce 1987a); Pillai 1954 recorded this species from Ilisha melastoma (as Pellona brachysoma ), but it is an unconfirmed record according to Bruce (1987a). Record from Nematalosa nasus (Bloch, 1795) (as Dorosoma nasus ) and N. erebi (as Fluvialosa erebi ) are also not confirmed ( Bruce 1987a). Recently Aneesh et al. (2017b) reported from Tenualosa toli .
