Type and type locality. Pillai (1964) collected several specimens from the gill chamber of Sardinella brachysoma Bleeker, 1852 (as Pellona brachysoma ) from Trivandrum, Kerala Coast, Arabian Sea. Pillai (1964) vaguely stated that the type material was deposited in the Indian Museum, Kolkata without any mention of the registration number. Our attempts to retrieve and enquire any ‘potential’ material that could be identified as the type material for J. brachysoma ended in vain. As there are no museum records of Pillai’s (1964) material, it seems inevitable that the types were either not deposited or have been subsequently lost.

Remarks. Joryma brachysoma can be easily distinguished from other species of Joryma by with the following characteristics: cephalon exposed dorsally; not reaching the margin of pereonite 1 expansion, pereonite 1 anterolateral expansion bilateral and slightly bilobed. Pleonite 1 entirely overlapped and not visible in dorsal view. Pleonites overlapped pleotelson round-triangular, uropods rami unequal, mandibular palp distinctly 3-segmented ( Pillai 1964).

Joryma brachysoma , first described by Pillai (1964) as Agarna brachysoma from the type host Sardinella brachysoma , was transferred to Joryma by Bowman & Tareen (1983) while expressing reservation about its generic position. Ravichandran et al. ’ s (2009) figure of Joryma brachysoma ( Pillai 1964) from the host Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier, 1816) from Southwest Coast of India is a misidentification and refers to Norileca indica (H. Milne Edwards, 1840) . Similarly, Ravichandran et al. ’ s (2010) figure of “ Joryma brachysoma ” in the buccal cavity of Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier) refers to C. boscii . Further, the report of Veerappan & Selvamathi (2009) is not confirmed, in view of the fact that, they failed to provide any relevant data for their claim. In fact, this species was not reported since its original description by Pillai (1964). Until now the identification of this species is based only on Pillai’s original description and it needs an accurate redescription.

Distribution. Recorded from Trivandrum, Kerala Coast, Arabian Sea ( Pillai 1964).

Hosts. Sardinella brachysoma Bleeker, 1852 (as Pellona brachysoma ) Pillai (1964).
