Type material examined

Holotype female (on slide, QMBA), labeled: 1. " HYMENOPTERA Fam. 25 Mymaridae Polynema female Fairy fly 144"; 2. " Polynema female victoria Girault , Type"; 3. "39". The holotype is in a relatively good condition, which permitted easy identification of more recently collected conspecific specimens from other Australian states.

Redescription

FEMALE. Body and appendages mostly dark brown (gaster a little lighter than head and mesosoma) but scape, pedicel, F1 and most of leg segments (except distal tarsomeres) brown; scape with weak cross-ridges, longer than pedicel or any funicle segment ( Fig. 98 View FIGURES 98–100 ); F1 longer than pedicel and subequal in length to F5, F6, and sometimes to F3, F2 the longest funicle segment, F3 (usually) and F4 slightly shorter than F1; longitudinal sensilla only on F5 (1) and F6 (1), clava about as long as combined length of F5 and F6, with 8 longitudinal sensilla; scutellum with row of frenal foveae; mesonotum mostly with reticulate sculpture ( Fig. 99 View FIGURES 98–100 ); forewing ( Fig. 100 View FIGURES 98–100 ) 4.3–4.4 x as long as wide, with about 4 rows of setae behind marginal vein; longest marginal cilia 3/4–4/5 greatest forewing width; hind wing (Fig. 101) about 18 x as long as wide; petiole (Fig. 102) longer than wide; ovipositor 4/5–9/10 length of gaster, not or barely exserted beyond gastral apex (Fig. 102); ovipositor length: metatibia length 1.0–1.2:1.

Description

MALE. Similar to female except for the normal sexually dimorphic features, such as antenna and genitalia (Fig. 103).
