Chaetonotus (Chaetonotus) brevispinosus Zelinka, 1889 View in CoL
Records from India. ANDHRA PRADESH: Kadapa (= Cuddapah), Visakhapatnam— Naidu (1962), Rao & Mohan (1987); GENERAL RECORD: Naidu & Rao (2004), Purushothaman (2017).
Habitat (as in Indian records). Freshwater; among filamentous algae.
Distribution. Originally described from Austria, the species has been found later on throughout Europe, in north America and in India.
Remarks. The species has been reported to be highly variable in size, with the total length ranging from 90 to 190 μm. Zelinka (1889) originally indicated a total length of 95-145 μm. The specimens first recorded from India by Naidu (1962) measured 80-100 μm in total length, so ranking among the smallest of its kind. Future analysis based on molecular data should confirm or disprove the taxonomic status of disjunct populations, especially the American and Indian forms of this species.
