Neotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Espírito Santo: Cariacica, Reserva Biológica Duas Bocas, floresta na beira da estrada para a localidade Alegre , 20°18’9’’S, 40°28’55’’W, 500 m, 10 April 2009 (fl.), C.N. Fraga et al. 2472 (MBML!, UPCB!).

Neotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Lagoa , cultivée, 20 April 1875 (ster.), A.F.M. Glaziou 8042 ( P [ P02202915 ]!, isoepitype C!).

Note:—The description of Calathea mediopicta refers to the leaf blade ornamentation, in this species a whitish band along the midrib. Even though Morren description is vague and there are no illustrations or material cited, the identity of this species can be assessed by the description by Regel (1878: 99). Regel (1878) provided detailed descriptions of flowers and leaves of a specimen also from the Jacob-Makoy nursery, in addition to a color plate, which served as guidance for the neotype choice.

Maranta prasina was described by Bull (1875: 7) as having oblong-ovate leaf blades, with a pale yellow green broad band along the midrib, with fimbriated edges. The collection chosen as neotype features these morphologies and other vegetative characteristics cited in the original description. Jacob-Makoy (1875: 822) placed this name as a synonym under C. mediopicta after receiving plants from William Bull’s nursery.
