( Figures 15, 16, 18 View FIGURES 15–18 )
Centris cockerellii Fox, 1899 View in CoL . 68.
Type data: Fox (1899) proposed the name C. cockerellii for the females of the type series of C. hoffmanseggiae . One of the seven female specimens mentioned by Cockerell (1897a) was found at NMNH being here designated as the lectotype. The specimen has the following data label ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 15–18 ): [whitish label] Las Cruces NM [printed]\ [whitish label] on Caesalpinia falcaria May 18. Ckll\ [whitish label] C. hoffmanseggia ♀ cotype. [handwritten]\ [red label] co [handwritten]-Type No. [printed] 3148 [handwritten] U.S. N.M. [printed]\ [whitish label] Moure 1957 this specimen is the type of Centris cockerelli Fox [handwritten]\ [dark red label] Lectotype Centris cockerellii Fox, 1899 . The current condition and depository of the remained female syntypes (now paralectotypes) is unknown.
Type locality: United States: New Mexico state: Las Cruces .
Comments: In the original description the name was spelled as C. cockerellii , but all subsequent authors (see Moure et al., 2007) except Lucas (1900) have been cited this species as “ C. cockerelli ”. According to ICZN’s Art. 33.5, this case has to be treated as an incorrect subsequent spelling (and therefore unavailable), and not as an emendation. This species was correctly interpreted by Snelling (1984) and Moure et al. (2007).
