Manota relicina View in CoL sp. n.

Figs 20 View FIGURE 20 A–D

Male. Colour. Head pale brown, vertex and dorsal part of occiput dark brown. Antenna brown, scapus in some specimens slightly paler than the more distal parts. Mouthparts pale yellowish. Thorax brown, posteromedial part of scutum and scutellum darker brown, ventral part of preepisternum 2 paler brown. Legs pale yellowish, apical third of femur 3 infuscated, in some specimens traces of slight infuscation at base of F3. Wing pale brown; haltere pale brown with dark brown knob. Abdomen brown, sternites paler than tergites. All setosity pale, yellowish or brownish, the thicker setae seeming darker than the finer setae and trichia. Head. Antennal flagellomere 4, Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 A. Palpomere 3 of maxillary palpus with apicomesial thumb-like extension, with 3–5 apically expanded curved sensilla; palpomere 4 with parasegment, palpomere 5 ca. 1.3–1.4 times longer than palpomere 4. Number of strong postocular setae 8–11. Thorax. Anepisternum setose, with 50–81 setae; anterior basalare non-setose; preepisternum 2 setose, with 12–28 setae; laterotergite non-setose; episternum 3 setose, with ca. 17–29 setae. Legs. Mid and hind tibial organs absent. Wing. R1 meeting C well on the basal half of the costal margin; the sclerotized part of M extending to the level of the tip of R1, wing length 1.8–2.0 mm. Hypopygium, Figs 20 View FIGURE 20 B–D: Sternite 9 half the length of gonocoxa, lateral margin sharply delimited, posterior margin rounded or transverse, anterior margin deeply incised, the setae similar to the ventral setae of gonocoxa. Ventral mesial margin of gonocoxa simple. Parastylar lobe varying greatly in shape depending on the angle of view, with 2 setae at the anterior end, the setae arising from prominent basal bodies. Paraapodemal lobe distinct, exposed in ventral view. Dorsal mesial margin of gonocoxa simple, convex. Dorsal posterior margin simple, posteromesial angle acute, apically rounded, the mesial side with a row of closely placed setae. On the ventral side of the latter there is a finger-like curved lobe bearing two apical setae. Two juxtagonostylar setae present, both subequal rather unmodified acute-ended megasetae arising from a common basal body which is much longer than the megasetae. Gonostylus about half the length of gonocoxa, oval in outline, with a narrow mesial lobe at the middle bearing two megasetae at the apex; the ventral setae similar to those on gonocoxa, the lateral and apical setae rather long, the dorsal side of gonostylus non-setose. Aedeagus elongate subtriangular, with indistinct lateral shoulders, the apex curved ventrad. Hypoproct posteriorly extending to the basal part of gonostylus, the ventral setae forming a mesial longitudinal stripe of ca. 7 setae on each half. Cerci medially separate, simple, the setae confined to the apex, short, about as long as the apical width of cercus.

Female unknown.

Discussion. Manota relicina is similar to M. comata , M. pedicellata and M. petiolata . The species may be difficult to distinguish if all the characters are not properly visible. M. relicina differs from the others by: 1) having its cercal setae short, the longest ones only slightly longer that the width of the cercus itself and much shorter than the gonostylus (in the other species at least double the cercal width and as long as or longer than the gonostylus) and 2) its very long basal body of the juxtagonostylar megasetae ( Fig. 20 View FIGURE 20 B). M. relicina resembles M. comata and M. petiolata by having a prominent subapical mesial lobe on gonostylus. The lobe is similar to that in M. petiolata and differs from that in M. comata by 1) being basally broader, 2) a little more basal position on the gonostylus and 3) having the two apical setae stronger. For further discussion, see under M. comata .

Etymology. The name is Latin, relicina , bent backward, referring to juxtagonostylar megaseta which are bent toward the base of their basal body.
