Genus Hydnobius Schmidt, 1841

Hydnobius Schmidt, 1841: 193 . Type species: Anisotoma punctatum Stürm, 1807 , designated by Thomson (1859: 58). Diagnosis. Antennal club 5-segmented, interrupted; mandibles moderately elongate, right mandible bidentate apically; labrum deeply emarginate; epistomal suture clearly indicated; eyes weakly or not protuberant; postocular tempora not developed; gular sutures widely separated at base, strongly convergent in basal one-half, moderately to narrowly separated anteriorly, with a suture separating gula and submentum; mesoventrite weakly oblique, not carinate (exception is H. kiseri ); mesocoxae separated by mesoventral process; male metafemur with large subapical tooth on posterior margin.

Distribution and diversity. The genus is Holarctic, and known to contain 30 species ( Daffner 1983, Newton 1998, Hoshina & Sunada 2003), including the following Nearctic species.
