Taxonomy. Original description: Terapon puta Cuvier View in CoL in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1829: 148 [Visakhapatnam, India: holotype: Not known].—Iraq synonyms: None.—Revisions: Vari (1978: 262).—Illustration: Randall (1995: 152, fig.) .

Status in Iraq. First record from Iraq by Mohamed & Abood (2017a).—Iraq materials: None.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Iraq: Shatt al-Arab River.—General distribution: Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: South Africa, East Africa, Persian Gulf, and Madagascar east to Philippines, south to Western Australia and Queensland ( Australia); Mediterranean Sea (Red Sea immigrant).—Habitat: This species inhabits coastal and brackish waters. Freshwater, brackish, marine.

Economic importance. Locally consumed, but of no commercial importance.

Conservation. Conservation status in Iraq: Unknown.—IUCN: NE (2023).—Threats: Unknown.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered a keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Low priority for conservation action.
