scientific name

Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin
status

Tamus communis Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 2: 1028. 1753.

“Habitat in Europa australi.” RCN: 7435.

Type not designated.

Original material: Herb. Linn. No. 1181.2 (LINN); Herb. Clifford: 458, Tamus 1 (BM); Herb. Burser XVII: 25 (UPS); Herb. Burser XVII: 26 (UPS); [icon] in Dodoëns, Stirp. Hist. Pempt., ed. 2: 400, 401. 1616.

Generitype of Tamus Linnaeus.

Current name: Dioscorea communis (L.) Caddick & Wilkin ( Dioscoreaceae ).

Note: Labani (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 70: 2. 1980) indicated 1181.1 (LINN) as type. However, the material came from Brander and was not received by Linnaeus until 1756 so it cannot be original material for the name. Caddick & al. (in Taxon 51: 112. 2002) indicated “plate on Hort. Cliff. p. 458” as type but no illustration of this taxon appears to be figured in that work.
