Taeniothrips frontalis ; sensu Pelikan, 1972: 338.

Female microptera. Body length 1.5 mm. Body uniformly dark brown; head yellowish between compound eyes dorsally; femora dark brown, tibiae and tarsi yellow. Fore wing pale. Antennal segments I–II dark brown, III yellow, IV–V pale brown each with basal third yellow, VI–VIII brown with extreme base of VI yellowish. Prominent body setae dark ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 1–17 ). Head 0.7 times as long as width, sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae behind postocular setae, smooth ocellar triangle; postocular setae arranged almost in a transverse line, S1 setae slightly forward toward the hind ocelli from setal row; ocellar setae III between fore and hind ocelli ( Fig. 76 View FIGURES 76–81 ). Antennal segment II with a few microtrichia, III–IV each with distinct apical neck, IV–V pedicelate, VI weakly pedicelate, setae on III and IV slightly stouter than on other segments ( Fig. 77 View FIGURES 76–81 ). Antennal segments I–VIII length/width ratio as follows: 0.8, 1.3, 2.7, 2.3, 2.1, 2.7, 1.7, 4.0. Pronotum 0.7 times as long as width, sculptured with transverse anastomosing striae almost throughout, about 27 discal setae, median discal setae about 0.09 times as long as pronotal median length; posteroangular setae I about 0.4–0.5 times as long as pronotal median length and longer than setae II; posteromarginal setae 2 pairs. Mesonotum with transverse striae throughout, paired CPS anteromedially; median pair of setae near posterior margin ( Fig. 78 View FIGURES 76–81 ). Metascutum with transverse striae medially; median pair of setae behind anterior margin and closer to submedian setae than each other, 0.8–0.9 times as long as metascutal median length; CPS present. Metascutellum narrow and transverse. Abdominal tergites I–VIII with transverse anastomosing striae throughout but sculpture weak at middle of posterior tergites, discal setae almost arranged in a transverse line, S1 setae slightly shorter than S2 setae ( Figs 79, 80 View FIGURES 76–81 ); tergites III–V with S4 setae not closed to S5 (marginal) setae; tergites VI–VIII with S4 setae reduced to minute; tergite VIII with no posteromarginal comb; tergite IX with 2 pairs of CPS; sternite VII with S1 setae far from posterior margin and wide apart each other than their length ( Fig. 81 View FIGURES 76–81 ).

Measurements (holotype female in microns). Distended body length 1500. Head length 105, width across cheeks 150; compound eyes dorsal length 55, width 45; ocellar setae III length 61–63, interval 23. Pronotal median length 143, width 205; posteroangular setae I length 63–68, setae II length 53, posteromarginal setae I 25–28. Metascutal median length 55; median setae length 45–50. Abdominal tergite IX median length 93; S1 setae 135–?, S2 setae 140–155, S3 setae 135–143, MD setae 33–38; tergite X median length 80; S1 setae 120–?, S2 setae length 115–?. Ovipositor length 270. Antennal segments I–VIII length (width) as follows: 28 (35), 38 (30), 60 (23), 53 (23), 40 (19), 50 (19), 13 (8), 20 (5).

Male. Unknown.

Type series. Holotype female, Czech Republic, Mohelno , 1 female (host unknown), 8.viii.1961, J. Pelikan . Paratypes: 2 females in single slide, Asealap. paloule (means small grassy area surrounded by forest, in which a neuropterous genus Ascalaphus was collected), 8.viii,1946, J.Pelikan ( MMDE) .

Comments. This species has previously been treated as P. frontalis based on Pelikan (1972). These two species are very similar to each other but are distinguished in the key above. Moreover, in P. pelikani the pronotal discal setae are slightly longer than in P. frontalis .

Etymology. In reference to Dr. Jaroslav Pelikan in Czechoslovakia, who reported this species in comparison with Taeniothrips kaszabi in 1972.
