TYPE LOCALITY: " Mexico " (= C Kansas, "Quivira"), see Hershkovitz (19576); redesignated as Canadian River valley, E New Mexico ( USA), see McDonald (1981:62) .

DISTRIBUTION: Formerly NW and C Canada, south through USA, to Chihuahua, Coahuila ( Mexico). Exterminated in the wild except in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming ( USA) and Wood Buffalo Park, Northwest Territory ( Canada). Reintroduced widely within native range and in C Alaska.

STATUS: CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered as B. b. athabascae.

SYNONYMS: americanus , athabascae, haningtoni, montanae, oregonus, pennsylvanicus, septemtrionalis (sic).

COMMENTS: Reviewed by Meagher (1986, Mammalian Species, 266).
