Natural history

It has been reared from dead insects, chicken dung, rotting fungus sporophores, decomposing plants, from the non-viable eggs of turtles and from the fruits of Opuntia dilleni (Cactaceae) . In the laboratory it has been reported as a scavenger in cultures of cockroaches and of bacteria, in some cases from blood agar plates before inoculation with bacteria.
