Remarks: Penny & Byers (1979) listed this species as a junior synonym of P. communis . Nevertheless, Sauer & Hensle (1977) regarded P. vulgaris as valid, a conclusion widely accepted in recent literature, including the European checklist ( Willmann 2013). Unfortunately, many of the records published before the 1980s under the name P. communis belong in fact to the species P. vulgaris . As was shown by Dvořák et al. (2019) and also here in the new material examined, P. vulgaris is probably common and widespread in Ukraine. Also, part of the material in the SMNH collections presented here as P. communis may belong to P. vulgaris .
