Cundinamarca: Andes of Bogotá, 2600 m, without date, H. Karsten s.n. (lectotype B-20-0078510!, here designated, isolectotypes LE-00008100!/-00008101!, NY-00148672! [fragment of B], W-0053381!).

Distribution and habitat: — Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and northern Peru at 2975–3550 m in elfin forests and shrubby paramo.

Remarks: —This species is quite similar to Cyathea zongoensis Lehnert (2003: 172) , which replaces it in the central Andes. Most Peruvian records of C. frigida are based on C. nephele Lehnert (2011a: 34) .
