There is doubt as to the status of Podocarpus trinitensis J.Buchholz & N.E.Gray. Farjon (2010; A Handbook of the World's Conifers. E. J. Brill, Leiden & Boston) states: ‘the leaves ( P. trinitenis ) are generally smaller than those of P. coriaceus Rich. , but the dimensions appear to overlap especially in younger trees or on branches of shaded growth. ... Whether the pollen cones can reach the length found in P. coriaceus is not known because only immature cones, not much beyond the bud stage, have so far been observed in collected specimens. Podocarpus trinitensis may turn out to be only a short-leaved variety of P. coriaceus ; both taxa are present on the island of Trinidad’. The RBS samples were divided into the two taxa based on leaf length. The Star Rating of P. trinitensis reflects the uncertainity of the taxon. Should it prove to be distinct, P. trinitensis will be a Black Star species.
