Vilargus campanus (Naudé) View in CoL

Deltocephalus campanus Naudé, 1926: 48 View in CoL ; 1929: 12.

Vilargus campanus (Naudé) View in CoL , Webb & Viraktamath, 2009: 30. Remarks. This species was described in Deltocephalus View in CoL from a single female from Bloemfontein in the Free State Province, according Naudé (1926). Despite extensive search the specimen could not be traced and is assumed lost. Based on the original description and figures, Webb & Viraktamath (2009) placed this species in the genus Vilargus View in CoL . Four species of Vilargus View in CoL have a similar shape of the female sternite 7, that is V. dentulicans View in CoL ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 52–59 ), V. lobulicans View in CoL ( Fig. 67 View FIGURES 60–67 ), V. pumilicans View in CoL ( Figs 77–79 View FIGURES 68–85 ) and V. trunculicans View in CoL ( Figs 111–115 View FIGURES 104–115 ), when compared to Naudé’s drawing of the female sternite 7 of V. campanus View in CoL . Present distribution records indicate that V. pumilicans View in CoL and V. trunculicans View in CoL occur in the Free State Province, albeit not from the type locality of V. campanus View in CoL . For these reasons and the lack of unique external features in most species of Vilargus View in CoL , the status of V. campanus View in CoL cannot be confirmed, other than its correct placement in Vilargus View in CoL .
