This large family is well-represented in the Neotropics (approximately 30 genera, 280 species), although most of the species are secretive and very seldom seen or collected. In general the adults hide in vegetation and are active near the water at unpredictable times. The majority of species are lotic. In addition to 11 genera and 29 named species in Ecuador, there are several unresolved species, a few of which may be undescribed.
