Material examined. 1 female, dissected and drawn, MBT 188, 24°58’S, 45°26’W, 98 m depth, São Paulo state, 30 May 1971, UERJ 458. 7 females, MBT 219, 23°03’S, 42°00’W, 100 m depth, Rio de Janeiro state, 6 June 1971, UERJ 459.

Amended diagnosis (after Senna & Souza-Filho, 2011). Antenna 1 peduncle article 1 dorsally smooth or with setules; article 2 anteroventral corner with 5–7 pappose or plumose setae. Antenna 2 peduncle article 4 ventral margin with 7–9 pappose or plumose setae and 3–5 brush setae, facial margin with 1 brush seta and a row of 8–9 setae extending to dorsal apex. Mandible incisors with 6 teeth, accessory setal row with 6 pectinate setae; right lacinia mobilis multicuspidate apically. Maxilla 1 inner plate with 4 short plumose setae apically. Maxilla 2 inner plate with 7 plumose setae apically. Gnathopod 1 coxa ventral margin with 14–16 pappose or plumose setae; propodus about 2.5 × longer than wide, posterior margin about 1.5–2 × longer than palm; palm sinuous. Gnathopod 2 coxa ventral margin with 9–13 pappose or plumose setae; propodus about 2.5 × longer than wide, posterior margin about 1.5–2 × longer than palm. Pereopod 3 carpus, posterior margin with 7 long curved stout setae. Pereopod 6 basis anterior margin with a facial row of long plumose setae and 4 short stout setae, posterior margin slightly concave, with 3 blunt lobes proximally and 4–5 plumose setae; carpus anterior margin with 3 stout setae. Pereopod 7 basis posteroventral lobe reaching the apex of merus; dactyl strong, about 1.1 × longer than propodus. Epimeral plate ventral margin with 5 short plumose setae. Epimeral plate 3 ventral margin with 3 small and 2 long plumose setae, posterior margin with 2 short setae. Uropod 1 peduncle with dorsoapical corner bearing 3 stout setae. Uropod 2 peduncle dorsodistal margin with corona of cuticular spines, rami continuously bearing trifid stout setae. Uropod 3inner ramus about 1.1 × longer than peduncle; outer ramus article 2 about 0.1 × as long as article 1, bearing 2 long slender setae apically. Telson with 2 apicolateral stout setae on each lobe.

Description. Based on material examined female UERJ 458.

Head. Antenna 1 peduncle article 1 about 1.3 × longer than wide, ventral margin with 6 plumose setae distally, dorsal margin with 1 seta distally; article 2 ventral margin with 7 long pappose setae and 2 brush setae, dorsal margin with 1 seta distally; article 3 short, ventral margin with 2 setae, facial margin with 1 brush and 2 short setae; primary flagellum 7-articulate, presenting aestethasc on articles 5–6; accessory flagellum 5-articulate. Antenna 2 peduncle article 1 with a well-developed ensiform process; article 2 short and subrectangular; article 3 ventral margin with 2 short setae, dorsal margin with 1 seta distally, facial margin with 3 setae; article 4 about 1.2 × longer than wide, ventral margin with 5 long pappose and 5 brush setae, dorsal margin with 2 setae proximally and 3 long setae distally, facial margin with 1 brush seta and a row of 9 long setae extending to dorsal apex; article 5 about 0.6 × the length of article 4, ventral margin with 6 long pappose setae; flagellum 7-articulate.

Pereon. Gnathopod 1 coxa weakly expanded anteroventrally, ventral margin with 16 long pappose setae; basis about 2.5 × longer than wide, anterior margin with 3 setae, posterior margin with 3 long setae, posterodistal corner with 3 pappose setae; ischium short and subrectangular, posterior margin with 3 pappose setae; merus anterior margin with 1 seta distally, posterior margin with 5 pappose setae; carpus anterior margin with 1 seta distally posterior margin with 6 pappose setae; propodus weakly setose, anterodistal margin with a tuft of setae, posterior margin with 1 stout seta defining palm; palm covered with setules on its margin, palmar hump medium; dactylus reaching the palmar corner, outer margin with 1 short seta medially. Gnathopod 2 coxa subrectangular, ventral margin with 13 long pappose setae; basis about 3.4 × longer than wide anterior margin with 9 setae, posterior margin with 2 long setae, posterodistal corner with 5 long pappose setae; ischium short and subrectangular, posterior margin with 3 pappose setae; merus posterior margin with 8 pappose setae; carpus anterior margin with 1 seta distally, posterior margin with 6 pappose setae; propodus weakly setose, anterodistal margin with a tuft of setae, posterior margin with 1 stout seta defining palm; palm covered with setules on its margin, palmar hump large; dactylus reaching the palmar corner. Pereopod 6 coxa weakly expanded posteroventrally, posterior margin with 1 short seta; basis about 2 × longer than wide, anterior margin with 4 stout setae and a row of long plumose setae extending to facial margin, posterior margin with 3 blunt lobes and 5 plumose setae proximally and a row of setules distally; ischium short and subrectangular, naked; merus anterior margin with 1 simple and 3 stout setae, posterior margin with 2 stout setae distally; carpus anterior margin with 3 stout and 2 simple setae, posterior margin with 1 seta distally; propodus anterior margin with 13 long setae; dactylus about 50% the length of propodus.

Type locality. Off the estuarine complex of Santos, north coast of São Paulo state (24º10’32”S, 45º29’10”W). Remarks. Pseudharpinia tupinamba was described for the estuarine complex of Santos (São Paulo state) and

Ilha Grande Bay (Rio de Janeiro state). The material from São Paulo was previously misidentified as P. dentata , type-species of the genus ( Wakabara et al. 1991; Wakabara & Serejo 1998; Valério-Berardo et al. 2000). After further analysis of the material from the same area together with a specimen from Yoko Wakabara’s collection sampled at Ilha Grande Bay, Senna & Souza-Filho (2011) observed remarkable differences among these individuals and P. dentata , establishing P. tupinamba as a new species. This species can be easily distinguished among the other Pseudharpinia due to the posterior margin of pereopod 6 basis with 3 proximal blunt lobes and uropod 2 with a crown of cuticular spines. By analyzing this material from the MBT project, it was possible to verify some clear variations such as setation on the appendices, however this can be clarified because these variations are very common among the amphipods, especially when we access samples with different maturation stages. Herein, the main characters that distinguish P. tupinamba are well observed and illustrated.

Geographic distribution. The species is known for the type locality (São Paulo state), Ilha Grande Bay (Rio de Janeiro state) and it is now recorded from new localities at both states ( Fig 26 View FIGURE 26 ). There are no geographic coordinates available for the Ilha Grande Bay record.
