Oligosarcus platensis View in CoL n. comb.

( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 )

Astyanacinus platensis, Messner, 1962 Although View in CoL the single-known specimen of Astyanacinus platensis Messner View in CoL was not included in this phylogeny, a close examination by one of the authors (MMA) revealed that it has a row of, at least, two tricuspidate ectopterygoid teeth. A row of ectopterygoid teeth is present only in Oligosarcus View in CoL and Xenagoniates View in CoL , among the analyzed characids lacking a supraorbital bone. According to Mirande (2010), Xenagoniates View in CoL is deeply nested into the Aphyocharacinae . Astyanacinus platensis View in CoL shares with Oligosarcus View in CoL , in addition to the row of tricuspidate ectopterygoid teeth (ch. 159, state 1; synapomorphy 4 of Oligosarcus View in CoL ), a somewhat posteroventrally angled articulation between the second and third infraorbitals (ch. 62, state 2; synapomorphy 3 of Oligosarcus View in CoL ), although this articulation in A. platensis View in CoL is less angled that in the species of Oligosarcus View in CoL . The articulation between the second and third infraorbitals in Xenagoniates View in CoL and, indeed, in all the species of the clade composed of the Aphyocharacinae , Aphyoditeinae , and Cheirodontinae analyzed by Mirande (2010) is anteroventrally angled, in an opposite condition to that of A. platensis View in CoL . Thus, this species is herein proposed to be transferred to the genus Oligosarcus View in CoL .
