Species recognition. This species is distinctive for its brown color and its ventral concavity that is interrupted dorsally by a toothlike carina and is sparsely filled with spinuli.

Description. Body length: 1.63–2.19 mm. Head: Frons dark brown, second row of setae slightly concave. Flagellomere 1 oval, slightly enlarged, brown. Palpus of normal size, light brown. Thorax: Scutum brown. Scutellum dark brown, with 2 pairs of setae; anterior seta two-thirds length of posterior seta. Pleuron brown. Mean costal length 0.49 wing length, range 0.48–0.51. Halter light brown to brown. Legs light brown. Forecoxa in lateral view yellowish-brown. Foretibia with 3–4 dorsal setae. Foretarsomeres slender, elongate. Midcoxa brown. Hind coxa brown. Hind coxal lobe light brown, short, with ventral projection. Posterior face of hind femur with basal group of peglike setae; ventral concavity large, long, interrupted at midlength by toothlike carina, with sparse spinuli; with small area of white membrane near toothlike carina and larger area near distal apex of concavity ( Figs 139–140). Abdomen: Abdominal tergite 1 brown, tergites 2–6 dark brown. Venter of abdomen gray, with sparse setae. Male terminalia dark brown, except cercus yellow.

Distribution. Mexico to Panama.

Derivation of specific epithet. From Latin for toothed cup, referring to the toothlike carina on the dorsal margin of the concavity of the hind femur.

Holotype. ♂, PANAMA: Canal Zone , Barro Colorado Island, 9.17°N, 79.83°W, 31.vii–7.viii.1996, J. Pickering, Malaise trap #325 [ LACM ENT 008002 ] ( LACM).

Paratypes. 1♂, same data as holotype , 6♂, same data except 1♂, 13–20.i.1993, 1♂, 5–12.v.1993, 1♂, 20– 27.x.1993, 1♂, 24–31.vii.1996, 1♂, 25.ix–2.x.1996, 1♂, 11–18.xii.1996 ( LACM, MIUP) .

Other material examined. 4♂ specimens from the following localities: COSTA RICA: Heredia: La Selva Biological Station ( INBC, LACM). MEXICO: Chiapas: Laguna Belgica ; Veracruz: 8 mi NNW Sontecomepan ( DEBU) .
