Dohrniphora porrasae View in CoL sp. n.

( Figs 101–104)

Species recognition. This species can be recognized by the pattern of peglike setae, which is varied, however, and the rounded, distally truncate lobe below the end of peglike setae.

Description. Body length: 1.75–2.25 mm. Head: Frons dark brown, second row of setae slightly concave. Flagellomere 1 round, brown. Palpus slightly enlarged, inflated, light brown. Thorax: Scutum dark brown. Scutellum dark brown, with 2 pairs of setae; anterior seta one-half length of posterior seta. Pleuron brown, but proepisternum and dorsum of anepisternum darker brown. Mean costal length 0.53 wing length, range 0.52– 0.54. Halter yellow. Legs yellowish-brown, hind leg darker. Forecoxa in lateral view yellow. Foretibia with 3– 4 dorsal setae. Foretarsomeres slender, elongate. Midcoxa brown. Hind coxa yellowish-brown. Hind coxal lobe brown, short, with ventral, dorsally curved, bare digitiform process. Posterior face of hind femur with peglike setae forming complete “V”, with longer dorsal row, and shorter, more diffuse ventral row or group; ventral margin of hind femur with rounded, posteriorly truncate, carinate lobe ending at approximate end of group of peglike setae ( Figs 101–104). Abdomen: Abdominal tergite 1 dark brown, tergites 2–6 dark brown. Venter of abdomen gray, with few setae, larger on posterior margin of segment 5. Male terminalia with epandrium yellowish-brown, hypandrium brown, and cercus yellow.

Variation. There is considerable variation in the structures of the hind femur, with the ventral “line” sometimes being a group, or the dorsal line, in the extreme, being reduced to two peglike setae ( Figs 103–104). There are many intermediate forms, however, so we recognize only one species at this time.

Distribution. Costa Rica to Ecuador. This is the commonest Dohrniphora species in Malaise traps operated at La Selva Biological Station.

Derivation of specific epithet. Named for Wendy Porras, a Costa Rican biologist who has worked with us extensively.
