Redescription

Adult ( Figure 7C View Figure 7 ). Wingspan 8.5–9.5 mm. Head grey to brown, frons yellowish-white. Antenna with scape dark brown on dorsal surface, greyish-white on ventral surface; flagellum alternately greyish-yellow and dark brown on dorsal surface, pale yellow on ventral surface. Labial palpus with second segment about twice length of diameter of eye, slightly longer than third segment; first and second segments white except dark brown at apex and at base of outer surface; third segment white on dorsal surface, pale yellow on ventral surface, dark brown laterally. Thorax and tegula dark brown. Forewing slightly broadened from base, apex somewhat acute; ground colour greyishbrown; dark brown spot from near middle of costal margin extending obliquely to upper corner of cell, a yellow stripe below it; dark brown streak along basal two-fifths of upper margin of cell, its distal half margined with yellow; subtriangular yellowmargined dark brown spots at middle and at lower corner of cell as well as at middle of fold, spots at middle of cell and at middle of fold joined; dark brown fascia from costal two-thirds length to before tornus, its anterior three-fifths subtriangular, oblique and slightly arched outward, posterior two-fifths upright; distinct ochreous-yellow (except yellow at costa) line along inner side of fascia, silvery-grey line along outer side of fascia; distal quarter with several streaks along costal margin and termen, four slen- der ochreous-brown streaks along costal margin and near apex joined at base, three dark brown streaks along termen below apex; fringe along distal part of costal margin yellowish-white basally, dark brown near two-fifths length and brown in distal three-fifths, fringe along termen dark silver-grey in basal two-fifths and yellow in distal three-fifths, fringe on dorsum greyish-yellow mixed with brown. Hindwing and fringe grey. Fore- and midlegs with femora greyish-brown on outer side, pale yellow on inner surface, tibiae and tarsi dark brown, with white oblique stripes on outer surface, yellowish-white on inner surface; hindleg yellowish-white, tibia and tarsus greyishbrown, tarsomeres white apically on outer surface. Abdomen dark brown on dorsal surface; yellowish-white on ventral surface, with dark brown oblique streaks laterally.

Male genitalia

Uncus narrowed at about one-third length, median third parallel sided, distal third widened to blunt apex; about two-fifths length of valva ( Figure 11C View Figure 11 ). Gnathos with a small hook apically; culcitula almost straight posteriorly. Valva shorter than tegumen– uncus complex, narrowed near middle, distal half slightly dilated, apex bluntly rounded; ventral free lobe short digitate, with sparse long setae apically. Vinculum with apically acute lobes turning down, not abruptly narrowed distally. Saccus elongate triangular, bluntly rounded apically. Aedeagus with basal third rounded, distal two-thirds narrowing gradually to apex. Eighth tergite semioval ( Figure 10C View Figure 10 ).

Female genitalia

Anterior apophyses about half length of posterior apophyses ( Figure 14C View Figure 14 ). Eighth tergite with posterior margin straight. Antrum nearly triangular, densely spined, with a longitudinal median furrow. Ductus bursae more than nine times length of posterior apophyses, slightly coiled, base narrow, with a small sclerotized patch on dorsal surface; ductus seminalis arising near base of ductus bursae. Corpus bursae nearly rounded, inner surface spined posteriorly and at middle of left side; accessory bursa arising from near posterior third of length.

China (Fujian, Hong Kong, Hunan, Zhejiang), Sri Lanka.

Remarks

The species is different from other species of the hibisci group by the ductus bursae being more than nine times length of posterior apophyses in the female genitalia, obviously longer than that in other species of the group. Helcystogramma epicentra is newly reported for China, and the female genitalia are described for the first time.
