Diagnosis. This new species is similar to E. aurea sp. nov. in the male and female genitalia, but can be easily separated by the dusty yellow or yellowish brown forewing, which is glossy golden cream in E. aurea sp. nov. The defining genital feature of the two species is the costal margin of the valva with a triangular or hillock-shaped process bearing finely rugose nodules in E. varians sp. nov., but with an excurved, ovate flap in E. aurea sp. nov.

Description. Adult ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 20 − 27 ). Wingspan 12.0−34.0 mm. Head dusty yellow to orange yellow. Antenna dusty yellow, 0.9× length of forewing; scape without pecten, flagellum unicolorous. Labial palpus with second segment yellowish white on inner surface, third segment dusty yellow, with scattered darker scales. Thorax and tegula dusty yellow to dark brown. Forewing index 0.3−0.35, uniformly dusty yellow or yellowish brown with dark-tipped individual scales; retinaculum present; cilia brown with darker tips, with three ill-defined cilia lines. Hindwing grayish brown with slight bronzy or purple iridescence; male with a single short, slender, evenly curved frenular bristle, female with two slender bristles, shorter one 0.8× length of longer one; cilia pale yellowish brown. Fore and mid legs blackish brown except brown mixed with darker scales on mid tarsus; hind leg yellowish brown mixed with darker scales.

Pregenital abdomen. First tergum with posterior 2/3 sclerotized. In male, coremata present in eighth segment; eighth sternite 0.5× as long as wide, posterior margin gently concave, without caudal process; eighth tergite trapezoidal, without caudal process in male. In female, seventh sternite semicircularly concave at middle on posterior margin.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 54 ). Vinculum gently concave on both margins; medial process absent from ventrocaudal margin. Tegumen as deep as vinculum, deeply concave at middle on anterior margin, convex at middle on posterior margin. Uncus with shouldered base touching each other, forming a heart-like membraneous section with tegumen; uncus lobe as long as depth of vinculum, twisted at base, with sparse setae dorsally, strongly contorted and overlapped in distal 1/4, forming a sclerotized, bean sprout-shaped section with a small melanized nodule; sclerite absent between uncus lobes. Valva subtriangular, variable, broad at base, narrowed to acute or blunt apex or to a mastoid distal process; costal margin with a small to large, triangular to hillock-shaped process bearing finely rugose nodules; basal flange absent; ventral margin with obvious, hillock-shaped ventral lobe in basal 2/3; basal margin with ‘secondary apodeme’ close to apodeme, represented only by a shallow convexity; inner surface unmodified. Juxta angled caudally, flat, trapezoidal, 0.5× length of aedeagus. Aedeagus stout, slightly bent ventrad, with very shallow dorsal emargination; double-walled: inner wall tubular, outer wall forming slender, triangular carinae subapically. Bulbus ejaculatorius 8.0−11.0× length of aedeagus, subdistal section semicircularly hypertrophied, distal section hypertrophied, 0.5× width of subdistal section, deep cup-shaped.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 80 − 82 ). Ovipositor length 2.0−3.5 mm. Eighth tergite tapered, anterior margin triangularly convex, posterior margin concave at middle and with sparse setae; microtrichiate on medial 1/4 and dorsal midline. Eighth sternite gently concave and with sparse setae on posterior margin, straight on anterior margin; a pair of small, knuckle-shaped processes posterior to eighth sternite. Ostium at middle of posterior margin of eighth sternite. Antrum absent; ductus bursae 1.3× length of corpus bursae, anterior 1/5 slightly broadened. Colliculum comprising a series of five rings, fourth ring thickly membraneous, others strongly sclerotized; first ring at anterior 1/6 of ductus bursae, broadly flanged, flower-like, with a pair of digitate processes invaginated into ductus bursae to level of second ring; second ring at junction of ductus bursae and corpus bursae, broad, protruded ventrally; third ring close to second ring, skirt-like, narrower than second ring; fourth ring elongate, strongly bent in some specimens; fifth ring flared anteriorly to form flanges which encircle and support corpus bursae; inception of ductus seminalis beneath postero-ventral margin of second ring. Corpus bursae thickly membraneous posteriorly by presence of colliculum, thinly membraneous anteriorly; signum absent.

Distribution. China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong, Hunan, Yunnan).

Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin varians , meaning variable, referring to the intraspecific variations of the valva.

Remarks. The valva of this species varies considerably: the apex may be acute ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 54 c) or blunt ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 54 d) or being a mastoid process ( Figs 54 View FIGURES 54 a, b); the ventral margin may be either concave at middle ( Figs 54 View FIGURES 54 c, d) or not concave ( Figs 54 View FIGURES 54 a, b); the process on the costal margin may arise from between basal 1/4 and middle, large and hillock-shaped ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 54 b), or from between basal 1/3 and middle or just from middle, widened triangularly ( Figs 54 View FIGURES 54 a, c), or from middle, small and triangular ( Fig. 54 View FIGURES 54 d), and it is on the costal margin ( Figs 54 View FIGURES 54 a, c) or slightly intruded into the inner surface of the valva ( Figs 54 View FIGURES 54 b, d).

In some females, the fifth collicular ring is absent, and thus the anterior region of the corpus bursae is not separated into two parts ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 80 − 82 a). The thinly membraneous region is easily missing during dissection.
