Current identity: Metopia yunnanica Chao & Zhang, 1988 , as correctly listed by Pape (1996) and as treated by Xue & Chao (1998).

Additional type specimens: Allotype ♀: Yunnan, Yunlong, Mt. Zhibenshan, alt. 2500 m, 20.VI.1981, Coll. by X.Z. Zhang. Paratypes 1♂: Yunnan, Lushui, alt. 2100 m, 29.V.1981, Coll. by C.M. Chao; 1♀: Yunnan, Dêqên, alt. 2500 m, 25.VIII.1981, Coll. by X.Z. Zhang. All specimens in NZMC.

Remarks: This species is related to M. suifenhoensis Fan , but can be distinguished from it by the frontal vitta being much wider anteriorly, subequal to the width of first antennal flagellomere; frontal bristle row without an interruption in the middle, entire parafacial covered with dense golden brown pollinosity (see also key in Kurahashi & Chaiwong, 2013). The male phallus has a uniquely swollen acrophallus ( Chao & Zhang, 1988a: fig. 13b).

Redescription of Male: Body length 6.0– 6.5 mm ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 A). Eye bare, deep red. Fronto-orbital plate, parafacial and postocular strip black with goldenish brown pollinosity; parafacial with strong bristles up to 4/5 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 B), about 0.7× as broad as fronto-orbital plate. Frontal vitta brown, about 0.3× as broad as fronto-orbital plate in median part; frons at vertex 0.4× head width ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 C); frontal row of 7 or 8 bristles; outer vertical bristle not differentiated from postocular bristles, two proclinate orbital and two upper orbital bristles. Ocellar bristles directed antero-laterally. Gena ground color black, with black bristles and light golden pollinosity, height 0.13– 0.17× eye height in lateral view ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 B). Antenna brown, almost reaching the level of vibrissal insertion, first flagellomere 3.5× as long as pedicel ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 C); arista short plumose; postocular bristles in six rows; vibrissa developed. Palpus yellow with black tip, slightly expanded in distal part.

Thorax ground color black; scutum pollinosity goldenish gray with four black dorsal vittae. Chaetotaxy: acrostichals 0+0, dorsocentrals 2+3, intra-alars 0+2, supra-alars 2, postalars 2, postpronotals 2(3), notopleurals 2, scutellum with 1 apical, 1 marginal, 1 basal and 1 discal bristles. Pleuron with meropleurals 3, katepisternal bristles 1: 1, prosternum, metasternum, proepimeron and proepisternum bare.

Wing hyaline; subcostal sclerite and basicosta yellow, bare; tegula black; costal spine not differentiated ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 A); vein R1 bare, vein R4+5 setose dorsally from junction of R2+3 halfway to crossvein r-m; lower calypter yellow.

Legs black, claw and pulvillus small. Fore femur with bristles along posterodorsal, posterior, posteroventral and ventral margins, fore tibia with one apical dorsal and one sub-median posterior bristles, fore first tarsomere with one or two ventral bristles in the basal part ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 F); mid femur with four anterior and two apical posterodorsal bristles, mid tibia with one sub-median anterodorsal and three posterior bristles; hind femur slightly yellow, with one row of dorsal bristles, one row of anterodorsal bristles and one row of ventral bristles, hind tibia with one median anteroventral bristle, one row of anterodorsal and one row of posterodorsal bristles.

Abdomen long oval; tergites 3 and 4 each with one pair of median marginal bristles, tergite 5 with sparse but strong marginal bristles; tergites 1+2 with large black spot, tergites 3 and 4 with three triangular spots, tergite 5 with light spot ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 E).

Redescription of Female: Body length about 6.0 mm ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 A). Frontal vitta about 0.9× as broad as frontoorbital plate in median part; three upper orbital bristles. Mid femur with two median anterior bristles. Other morphological characteristics are similar to those of the male.
