Remarks

Columbicola clayae View in CoL can be identified by its distinctive genitalic structure. To date, it is the only member of this complex known to occur on either the African mainland or the Arabian Peninsula. Although Tendeiro (1960, 1965) recorded C. clayae View in CoL from several subspecies of Treron View in CoL ‘‘ australis View in CoL ’’, both Dickinson (2003) and del Hoyo et al. (1997) split this host species into T. calvus View in CoL , with many subspecies on the African mainland and Arabian Peninsula, and T. australis View in CoL (L.), which is restricted to Madagascar and its neighboring islands. All records of C. clayae View in CoL from T. ‘‘ australis View in CoL ’’ are, in fact, from subspecies of T. calvus View in CoL , and there are no known records of Columbicola View in CoL from T. australis View in CoL (sensu stricto). Small numbers of C. clayae View in CoL were also recorded from Oena View in CoL c. capensis View in CoL by Tendeiro (1960) and Streptopelia View in CoL s. semitorquata View in CoL by Tendeiro (1965).
