Type Locality: "Nenokubi Seaside, Shimoda, Nakamura City, Kôchi Prefecture." .
Vernacular Names: Japanese Otter.
Distribution: Formerly widely distributed in Japan, now probably extinct. May now only exist on Shikoku Isl ( Abe et al., 1997).
Conservation: CITES – Appendix II.
Discussion: Distinctiveness of the Japanese otter was supported by Suzuki et al. (1996 b).
