Medium sized, robust, overall dark brown/black flies, 22–23 mm. Legs contrasting black and brown. Tergites with quadrate dark brown/black patches. This description is based on 2 female specimens found in Malaise traps (see Discussion below).

Adult. Female.

Head: Face covered in dense dark gold pile. Mystax hair sparse, long, gold. Genae with sparse white hair. Long, strong yellow/white peristomal (oral) bristles. Occipital fringe of long gold hair merging into black proclinate postocular bristles. Ocellar hair black; orbital hair gold; long thin gold facial hair extending over mystax. Antenna black with gold and black hair. Segments 1 & 2 with black dorsal hair and yellow ventral hair. Style apex “spear-shaped” (wide medially with tapered apex). Thorax dark brown with long black evenly dispersed acrostical hair. Paramedian stripes dark brown, broad, merging into median stripe; lateral spots broad, well defined. Pleura gold pollinose with gold and black hair; dorsal anepisternal hair black. Chaetotaxy with: 2 notopleural, 3 supraalar, and 3–4 postalar bristles. Posterior dorsocentral hair long, black. Sparse fine gold scutellar hair, subapical gold and black bristles; long gold marginal bristles. Legs brown, tan & black. Fore & mid femora with broad black anterodorsal streaks, anteroventral on hind femora, all apices black. Tibiae yellow/gold with black bristles. Tarsi yellow/gold with black bristles. Wings similar in venation to Promachus anicius ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1–4 ); veins tinged yellow/brown; cells r 1 & r 2+3 darker. Abdomen dark brown/black integument, brown pollen with gold hair; yellow/gold lateral hair, hair with twisted apices on tergites 1 & 2. Tergites with quadrate dark brown/black patches. Tergites 1 & 2 with lateral brown pollen only, mostly integumental brown. Tergites 3–6 medially bare with sparse yellow hair, laterally brown pollinose with yellow hair. Sternites with sparse, long trailing, yellow hair. Female genitalia ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 33–35 ) similar to Promachus anicius and P. yesonicus ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 26–32 ), cerci wide, plate-like.

Material examined. Kangwon Province . 2 ♀: 6–31/VII/2003, Chuncheon, Nam-myon, Hudong-li, 37°44’31”N, 128°35’41”E GoogleMaps .

Field notes. Promachus chinensis was not encountered in over an 8 year collecting period outside of the Chuncheon area , only 2 females were collected. See table 1 for prey and seasonality .
