( Figs 1 View FIGURES 1–4 , 36, 37 View FIGURES 36–41 & 5–11 View FIGURES 5–11 )

Erax integer Macquart, 1846: 81 View in CoL .

Philodicus integer (Macquart) View in CoL : Oldroyd, 1972, 391. Medium to large slender, gray flies, 19–29 mm. The only representative of the genus in South Korea. As noted by Oldroyd (1972: 290), there exists a wide range of variation within this species (see Discussion below) in regards to chaetotaxy abundance and color, body size, and wing venation.

Adult. Male.

Head: Face with silver/white pile. Mystax with abundant, long, white hair. Genae with long white hair. Occipital fringe of shorter white hair merging into stout black postocular bristles. Black ocellar hair; dense white orbital hair; long white facial hair. Antenna brown, gray pollinose; style apex “spear-shaped” (wide medially with tapered apex) with distinct apical micro segment. Thorax light to dark gray with short black evenly dispersed acrostical hair. Paramedian stripes and lateral spots well defined. Pleura covered in silvergray pollen and sparse white hair; dorsal anepisternal hair black. Chaetotaxy with: 2 notopleural, 2 supraalar, and 2–3 postalar bristles. Posterior dorsocentral hair long, black with 3–4 black bristles. Long white and black scutellar hair; 5–8 strong black marginal bristles (both sides combined); white marginal bristles. Legs all black. Femora and tibiae black with gray/white hair and black bristles. Tarsi black with black bristles, white and gold hair. Wings ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1–4 ) clear; apices tinged gray. Cross vein between R 4 and R 5 positioned basal to the apex of discal cell (1m 2). Abdomen dull gray with short black hair dorsally, white laterally; segments 5–8 strongly tapered. Medial dorsal surfaces of tergites 2 and 3 with concentrations of black hair. Lateral black/ white bristles on tergites 1–5. Tergite 8 dark. Sternites with sparse white hair. Male genitalia ( Figs 5, 7–11 View FIGURES 5–11 ) black with yellow, black and white hair. Hypandrium medially wide. Epandrium ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5–11 ) elongated, lobes with a medial ventral tooth. Gonostylus ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 5–11 ) with oval lobe, plate with well defined hook-like structure. Aedeagus ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 5–11 ) with 3 extensively long prongs arched dorsally over apices of epandrial lobes.

Female. Similar to male except abdomen with less hair. Lateral bristles on tergites 1 and 2 only. Tergite 9 stout with yellow hair. Dorsal cerci ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5–11 ) covered in dense, stout, black spines; lateral and distal apices with longer projecting spines. Sternite 8 with 2 broad apically toothed lobes.

Field notes. Philodicus integer inhabits sandy areas along inland rivers and coastal beaches. The asilid is sympatric with Astochia virgatipes ( Coquillett, 1898) and Promachus anicius in coastal habitats; and Promachus yesonicus , Lasiopogon hinei Cole & Wilcox, 1938 , Lasiopogon terneicus Lehr, 1984 , Stichopogon inaequalis, Loew, 1847 and Stichopogon nartshukae Lehr, 1975 on inland river banks. They mate in a tail-totail position. Prey: Diptera : Muscidae ; Syrphidae ; Tabanidae . See table 1 for prey and seasonality.
