Gynodiastylis Calman, 1911 View in CoL

Type species. Gynodiastylis carinata Calman, 1911 .

Diagnosis. Females and subadult males. Pereopod 1 with brush of long setae on propodus. Fully developed exopods on pereopods 1–2 and no exopods on pereopods 3–4 in the female.

Adult male. Antenna peduncle of 3–4 articles, flagellum of 7–12 articles, never extending past posterior border of carapace. Pereopod 1 with brush of long setae on propodus. Fully developed exopods present on maxilliped 3– pereopod 2, 3 or 4. Uropod endopod may have one article less than conspecific female.

Remarks. The most similar genus is Axiogynodiastylis , which is distinguished by the rudimentary exopods present on pereopods 3–4 in the female. There is no way to distinguish between the two genera if only males are present; however, the key to the New Zealand species does not rely on generic differences to separate the species, and all New Zealand gynodiastylids are included in the key.

New Zealand species. Gynodiastylis carinata Calman, 1911 , G. chathamensis n. sp., G. koataata Gerken, 2001 , G. milleri Jones, 1963 .
