The Gebiidea are distinguished from the Axiidea by having the first pereopod chelate or subchelate and the second much smaller, either without chelae of subchelate. The first pereopods often are equal or nearly equal in size and shape. Like the Axiidea , these lobster-like animals dig or burrow into mud or sandy mud.
