Melochia corchorifolia Linnaeus (1753: 675) View in CoL

Distributed throughout tropical and subtropical areas of the Old World. Introduced to the New World where it occurs in disturbed sites, cultivated areas and wastelands ( Goldberg, 1967). Goldberg (1967) has cited it for Brazil based on two collections, one from Rio Grande do Sul (“Instituto Anchietano de Pesquisas”—PACA herbarium), and the other from Rio de Janeiro (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Herbarium—K). During the development of this work only one image of material deposited in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Herbarium was analyzed. However, it was not possible to recognize the occurrence of this species in the Southeast Region, due to the impossibility of observing the necessary diagnostic characters in this image.
