Melochia lanata Saint-Hilaire (1825: 167) View in CoL

Endemic to Brazil, M. lanata is known from only a single collection (A. St.-Hilaire s.n.) deposited in P and MPU herbaria from “Olho d’Agua”, Minas Gerais. An image of the latter specimen (MPU) was analyzed, although it was not possible to observe the diagnostic characters of M. lanata . The morphology of branches and leaves in the image are very similar to M. morongii Britt. , a species distributed through the Southeast Region. This similarity is evident even considering the character used by Saint-Hilaire to distinguish the species: woolly indumentum. Fruit characters could not be analyzed. Therefore, M. lanata cannot be confirmed either as a distinct species or a synonym of M. morongii .
