Diagnosis. Although it is morphologically very similar to A. bayardi and A. cyrtoxys . It is distinguished from congeners by the combined characters of the male terminalia.

Description. Medium sized species (10 ̶ 15 mm); body black with metallic blue reflections and sparse tomentum. Head. Face with black setae; facial gibbosity with black and white setae; white beard. Antennae with black setae on the basal two segments. Thorax with black and white setae, without pruinosity, and with long black setae laterally. Wings with first posterior cell opened at margin ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 5 a). Legs. Black with white setae, very abundant on coxae. Abdomen. Flattened with central part of the III ̶VII tergites red-orange; wider in female. Male terminalia. With two tips on gonostylus ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 5 b).

Female terminalia. Short, tubular, and with yellow setae.

Biology and ecology. Known flight period comprises May to August. They are commonly perched on trunks or branches in valleys and high mountain woods, located between 500m and 1700m above sea level. Their main preys are Hymenoptera and other Diptera , included asilids of the genus Choerades ( Lehr, 1989) .

In Spain, previously, this species had been cited by Czerny & Strobl (1909) in El Escorial (Province of Madrid), and by Pérez Andueza & Portillo (1991) in Aliseda de Tormes, Risco de los Barrerones-Gredos, Umbrías, Cuerda del Risco del Águila-Puerto de Castilla, Puerto del Tremedal, Puerto de Mijares and Villanueva del Campillo (all these locations belonging to the Province of Ávila); also in El Cerro de Peña Negra-Tornavacas (Province of Cáceres) and in the Province of Zamora, without specifying locations.
