TYPE SPECIES: Eptesicus melanops Rafinesque, 1820 (= Vespertilio fuscus Beauvois, 1796 View in CoL ).

SYNONYMS: Neoromicia, Rhinopterus, Vespadelus .

COMMENTS: Middle and South American species reviewed by W. B. Davis (1965) and Davis (1966). Australian species reviewed by Kitchener et al. (1987). Hill and Harrison (1987) would transfer the Australian and most of the African species (subgenera Vespadelus and Neoromicia ) to Pipistrellus . Volleth and Tidemann (1991) would raise Vespadelus to full generic rank.
