Boydaia Womersley, 1953: 82 ; Fain 1957b: 251, 1958a: 176, 1971: 98, 1985: 144.

Type species: Speleognathus sturni Boyd, 1948 by original designation.

Diagnosis. Hypostome with 1–2 pairs of setae. Propodonotal region with 5–6 pairs of setae (ve present or absent). Agenital and pseudanal setal series with 1–2 pairs of setae. Each trochanter of legs I and II with 1 seta.

Remarks. This cosmopolitan genus is recorded mainly from passerines, and only 6 of the 38 described species are probably secondarily associated with non-passeriform birds from the orders Caprimulgiformes , Galliformes , Falconiformes , and Psittaciformes ( Fain et al. 1977; Fain 1985; Skoracki et al. 2012). The Afrotropical fauna comprises 14 species in this genus: BOydaia bradOrnis Fain, 1956 , B. buphagi Fain, 1961 , B. cecrOpis Fain, 1969 , B. cinnyris Fain, 1969 , B. falcOnis Fain, 1956 , B. hirundOae Fain, 1956 , B. indica Fain, 1969 , B. nectarinia, Fain 1958 , B. psalidOprOcnei Fain, 1956 , B. pycnOnOti Fain, 1956 , B. saxicOlae Fain, 1969 , B. spatulata Fain, 1956 , B. zOsterOpis Fain, 1963 , and B. zumpti Fain, 1956 .
