Trispeleognathus Fain, 1958b: 178, 1962a: 7 , 1963b: 374.

Type species: Speleognathus striatus Crossley, 1952 by original designation.

Diagnosis. Palps with 3 segments. Hypostome with 1 pair of setae. Propodonotal shield absent. Propodonotal region with 5 pairs of setae (se absent). Hysteronotal region with 5 pairs of setae (h2 absent). Agenital setal series with 1 pair of setae. Pseudanal setal series with 2 pairs, each. Genital series with 3 pairs of setae. Pseudanal series with 2 pairs of setae. Setae 1a, 3a and 4a present. Number of leg setae: coxae 2–1–1–1, trochanters 1–1–0–0, femora 5–4–3–3, genua 4–4–3–3, tibiae 5–3–3–3. Setae situated in anterior part of tarsi I–IV reduced to rod-like microsetae.

Remarks. This monotypic genus is recorded on columbiform birds from the Afrotropical, Australian, Nearctic, and Neotropical regions ( Crossley 1952; Fain 1955b; Amaral 1963, 1965; Fain & Aitken 1968; Domrow 1969; Fain & Hyland 1970, 1975; Pence & Casto 1976).
