Discussion: Sister genus to Eliurus based on morphological features ( Carleton and Goodman, 1998). Generic status questioned by phylogenetic study of cytochrome b data, in which Voalavo gymnocaudus is grouped as sister species to Eliurus grandidieri , the two forming a basal clade to all other Eliurus ( Jansa et al., 1999) .
